SIZES:
Oxford needles come in 8 standard sizes comprised of 2 widths and 5 tip lengths. The width of the needle will determine the yarn you can use in it. There are two widths available: REGULAR and FINE The REGULAR is the widest needle tip. It take heavy weight rug yarns, thick knitting yarns, 5-8 cut wool strips (my favourite strip is a 6cut) and other thick fibres The FINE is a narrower needle tip. It is ideal for fine yarns that are worsted weight or thinner and 3 cut strips. The needle tip length determines the height of the loop the needle will make. There are 5 lengths which correlate to a number- #14, #13, #10, #9, #8. This number is stamped on the needle end of your punch. The bigger the number the smaller the loop height it will make. ie, #14 makes the shortest loop, and a #8 makes the tallest The FINE needles are available in all five lengths; 14 through 8 The REGULAR needles are available in the 3 taller lengths; 10, 9, 8 See the chart below for needles at a glance. More information about various punch needles and all the incredible things you can do with them is available in my book, "Mastering the Art of Punch Needle Rug Hooking; Techniques and Projects", from Amy Oxford's website or by taking a class with myself, or other Oxford Certified Instructors.

What size do you need?
While having all the punches can be fun, you can be a successful puncher with just one or two needles.
The most common needles that I use and sell are the #10 Regular, #13 Fine and #14 Fine. When deciding which needles you'd like to use consider the following: If you already have a stash of thick, chunky weight yarns, or you want to make thick plush floor rugs you may want to choose a Regular Punch Needle. If you have an abundance of fine (worsted weight or finer) knitting yarns or want to create detailed delicate looking rugs choose a Fine Punch Needle. If you want to use wool strips or combine wool strips and yarn in your rug choose a Regular in either #10 or #9. If you want to use both thick and thin yarn, with the same height loops? Choose a Fine and a Regular needle with the same number on the handle. If you want to create sculptural effects, and loops of different heights get a few needles of different numbers, or a #8 needle in Regular or Fine (depending on the yarn you are using) and clip the loops to sculpt them Still not sure which punch needle you'd like to try? Please feel free to contact me with your questions. I'm always happy to help! |
